Bali eSIM for New Years Eve: How Much Data and Which Plan

For a New Years Eve trip to Bali, install a data-only eSIM at home and switch it on after landing. A 7 to 15 day holiday fits the 2 GB or 4 GB Indonesia plan; order a few days early, not on December 31.

For a Bali trip over New Years Eve, a data-only eSIM you install at home and switch on after landing at Ngurah Rai is the simplest way to stay online. Most holiday trips run 7 to 15 days, so the 2 GB or 4 GB Indonesia plans are the realistic picks, and you should order a few days before you fly rather than on December 31. This Bali eSIM works on Indonesian networks as a roaming line, which also matters for the IMEI rules covered below.

Why plan your Bali eSIM before the holiday rush?

Late December is peak season in Bali. Flights land full, the arrivals hall at Ngurah Rai gets crowded, and the last thing you want after a long flight is a queue at a SIM counter while your driver waits outside.

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you download to your phone by scanning a QR code. There is no plastic card to swap, and your home SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number keeps receiving calls and texts if your home plan allows it. The eSIM only handles mobile data.

Timing matters more over the holidays than in any other month. Every payment proof is checked by staff, and customer support runs from 08.00 to 22.00 WIB (Bali is one hour ahead of WIB). If you place an order at 11 p.m. Bali time on December 30, the QR code may not arrive until the next morning. The validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Indonesia, not when you buy it, so ordering a week early costs you nothing.

How much data do you need for a New Years Eve trip?

The store's own rule of thumb is that 1 GB covers roughly one day of maps, chat, and moderate social media. That makes the 1 GB / 7 days plan too tight for most holiday trips, in our opinion, unless you mostly live on villa Wi-Fi and only need Grab and WhatsApp on the road.

New Years Eve itself is the heaviest day. People film fireworks at Kuta, Seminyak, or Jimbaran, post stories, and video call family back home at midnight. Video eats data fast, so it helps to record on the night and upload the longer clips the next morning on hotel Wi-Fi.

Trip length Typical use Plan that fits
5 to 7 days Maps, Grab, WhatsApp, some Instagram 2 GB / 15 days
8 to 15 days Daily maps and socials, a few video calls 4 GB / 30 days
2 weeks or more, heavy video Lots of stories and calls on mobile data 4 GB plus a second plan if needed
Christmas to New Year, mostly in a resort Messaging, resort Wi-Fi for the rest 2 GB / 15 days

None of the plans can be topped up. If you run out on January 1, you buy a new plan and scan a new QR code, which takes a few minutes once the order is confirmed. Keep that in mind if your trip spans both Christmas and New Year.

Which Indonesia eSIM package should you pick?

All four plans are data-only and cover Bali along with the rest of Indonesia, so a side trip to Lombok, Nusa Penida, or Labuan Bajo uses the same eSIM. Prices in the table come straight from the store and are shown in rupiah.

eSIM Indonesia plans and prices (live from the store)
PlanDataValidityPricePer day
eSIM Indonesia 1 GB / 7 Days1 GB7 daysRp30.000±Rp4.286
eSIM Indonesia 2 GB / 15 Days2 GB15 daysRp50.000±Rp3.333
eSIM Indonesia 3 GB / 30 Days3 GB30 daysRp70.000±Rp2.333
eSIM Indonesia 4 GB / 30 Days4 GB30 daysRp110.000±Rp3.667

For a typical Christmas or New Year week, the 2 GB / 15 days plan is the sensible minimum. It gives you room for maps, ride-hailing, and messaging, with a little left for photos.

If you are staying longer than a week, or you know you will post a lot from the beach on the night, go straight to 4 GB / 30 days. It is the largest plan, so heavy users should still lean on Wi-Fi for long videos.

Can you use a Bali eSIM on a New Years Eve cruise?

Many visitors book a sunset or dinner cruise out of Benoa Harbour for the countdown, or a boat to Nusa Lembongan the next day. A land-based eSIM connects to Indonesian cell towers, so it keeps working while the boat stays close enough to shore to be in range. Further out at sea, the signal simply drops.

Some larger ships run their own onboard cellular network. That network is not Indonesian, and a phone that connects to it may bill your home SIM at your carrier's maritime roaming rates. Before boarding, it is worth doing two things.

  • Turn off data roaming on your home SIM line, so only the eSIM can use data.
  • Ask the operator whether the boat has Wi-Fi, and save offline maps and tickets before you leave the dock.

Does your phone qualify, and what about IMEI rules?

Check your phone before you pay. It needs to support eSIM, show an EID when you dial *#06#, and have an Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan menu. Apple lists the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and later as eSIM capable. Certain dual nano-SIM iPhones (models ending in CH/A or ZA/A) are not supported, and neither are phones that are still carrier-locked. Our phone compatibility checker walks you through it.

Indonesia also controls which phones can join local networks by IMEI, the unique serial number of a device. Foreign visitors who want to put a local Indonesian SIM in their phone have to register the IMEI through Indonesian Customs (Bea Cukai), and duties can apply above the personal goods allowance. The regulation, Ministerial Regulation No. 1 of 2020 from Komdigi (Indonesia's communications ministry), exempts inbound roamers using international roaming from that check (Article 3, paragraph 5). Our Indonesia eSIM works as a roaming line, so you stay online without registering. If you want a local number for a longer stay, registration is the official route, and we cover that choice in local SIM vs roaming eSIM for an iPhone in Indonesia.

Winter or summer: does the season change anything?

For many visitors, a December trip means escaping winter at home. In Bali it is the rainy season, with heavy afternoon downpours that push people indoors for a while. The eSIM works the same in any month, but a wet afternoon in a café is a good moment to switch to Wi-Fi and save your data for the evening.

The bigger seasonal factor is crowds. On the night itself, thousands of phones on the same beach all try to send a "Happy New Year" at 00:00, and messages can sit in a queue for a few minutes. A few habits help.

  1. Send your midnight greetings to family a little before the countdown, or wait 20 minutes.
  2. Download offline Google Maps for south Bali before December 31.
  3. Screenshot booking confirmations and your Grab or Gojek pickup details.
  4. Agree on a meeting point with your group in case messages lag.

Setting it up before you fly

Install the eSIM at home while you are on Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code from your order page, label the line something like "Bali data", and leave data roaming off on it until you land. Once you are through immigration at Ngurah Rai, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch on data roaming. Step-by-step screenshots are in our eSIM installation guide, and iPhone users can follow how to install eSIM on iPhone.

One honest limitation for international readers is payment. Checkout only accepts Indonesian bank transfer or QRIS, in rupiah. If you have an Indonesian bank account or an app that can pay QRIS, it works smoothly; if not, this store will not suit you. The payment page explains the exact-amount transfer with its three-digit unique code.

Before the countdown

Pick the plan by trip length, order it about a week before your flight, and install it at home. Then New Years Eve in Bali is about the fireworks, not hunting for a signal. Unpaid orders expire after 3 hours, so finish payment once you start checkout, and if the QR email goes missing you can resend it from the order tracking page.

FAQ about this topic

Is there a special Christmas or New Year eSIM package for Bali?
No. The Indonesia plans are the same all year, and they cover Bali plus the rest of the country. For a holiday week the 2 GB / 15 days plan is a sensible minimum, and the 4 GB / 30 days plan suits longer stays or heavy social media use.
When should I buy my eSIM for a late December trip to Bali?
About a week before you fly is ideal. Payment proofs are checked by staff during 08.00-22.00 WIB, and holiday demand is high. The validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Indonesia, so buying early does not shorten your plan.
Do I need to register my phone's IMEI to use this eSIM in Bali?
No. Indonesia's IMEI check, under Ministerial Regulation No. 1 of 2020, exempts inbound roamers on international roaming. This eSIM runs as a roaming line, so it works without Customs registration. Registration through Bea Cukai is only needed if you want to use a local Indonesian SIM card.
Can I pay for the eSIM with a foreign credit card?
No. Checkout only accepts Indonesian bank transfer or QRIS, in rupiah, and you must transfer the exact amount including a three-digit unique code. If you have no Indonesian bank account or QRIS-capable app, this store is not a good fit for your trip.
Will I get a local phone number with the Bali eSIM?
No. The eSIM is data only, with no phone number, SMS, or regular calls. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so you can still receive texts there, and WhatsApp or other app calls work over the eSIM's data.
